In a fast-growing industry, “good enough” isn’t good enough anymore, especially when the work involves low-voltage electrical systems installed outdoors, exposed to weather, soil conditions, irrigation, and constant use. That’s exactly why the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) created the Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technician (CLVLT) program: to raise the bar for competence, safety, and consistency in landscape lighting.

The problem CLVLT was built to solve: No true national standard

AOLP points out a hard truth: there are no clearly defined national standards for low-voltage outdoor lighting, even though the industry is large and the number of exterior lighting companies keeps growing. In many states, tests used to license low-voltage contractors may have little or nothing to do with the actual work technicians perform in the field. AOLP believes this gap in relevant standards has a “profound impact” on the safety and quality of services lighting professionals provide.

CLVLT is the industry’s answer to that gap.

What CLVLT does differently

The CLVLT certification is designed specifically for 12-volt systems and measures a technician’s real-world knowledge and capabilities through a formal exam that includes eight (8) sections with written and/or hands-on elements. AOLP is also clear: this exam is for experienced technicians and “should not be taken lightly.”

That matters for two reasons:

1. It gives employers and clients a clear benchmark—a way to identify technicians who have demonstrated competency, not just time on the job.
2. It protects the reputation of the entire profession by encouraging consistent installation and service practices that prioritize safety and quality.

Why it’s good for technicians, and good for businesses

AOLP’s position is that holding the outdoor lighting community to a higher standard improves quality, safety, and profitability across the board. Certified techs help reduce avoidable mistakes, improve troubleshooting, and deliver more reliable results—leading to fewer callbacks, stronger client trust, and better long-term margins.

Just as important: CLVLT isn’t a “one-and-done” badge. The certification is valid for two (2) years, after which a $50 renewal fee is required along with twelve (12) Continuing Education Credits (CECs) every two years. AOLP also specifies that at least six (6) CECs per renewal period must be lighting related.

Ongoing education keeps the credential meaningful

AOLP outlines multiple ways to earn CECs, including:

• Attending the AOLP Annual Conference & Expo (6 CECs)
• Serving on an AOLP committee (6 CECs, plus +1/year if chair)
• Teaching seminars (1 CEC each), writing for the LightLines newsletter (1 CEC/article), proctoring exams (6 CECs), and more

This structure keeps CLVLTs current, connected, and accountable—ensuring the credential stays meaningful as products, methods, and best practices evolve.

The bottom line: CLVLT is important because it creates a real, field-relevant standard where one hasn’t existed—improving safety, workmanship, and professionalism for everyone who touches low-voltage outdoor lighting.
