CLVLT is NOT entry level
The CLVLT certification is for experienced outdoor lighting professionals only. To be eligible, you (or your technician) should have at least 3+ years of experience in landscape lighting installation and/or service work.
This exam is designed to validate the knowledge and capabilities of technicians who already work in the trade—people who understand outdoor lighting in the real world and are ready to be held to a higher standard. If you’re brand new to outdoor lighting, CLVLT is not the right starting point yet. Why AOLP created the CLVLT certification
Despite the growth of low voltage landscape and architectural lighting, there are still no clearly defined national standards for 12-volt outdoor lighting work. In many states, contractor licensing tests have little to do with what technicians actually do day-to-day.
AOLP believes this lack of standardization impacts the safety and quality of work delivered across the industry. CLVLT was created to close that gap: a standardized certification exam that measures a technician’s ability to install and service 12-volt low voltage lighting systems at a professional level—improving quality, safety, and long-term profitability for outdoor lighting companies.

AOLP is upfront about this: the CLVLT exam should not be taken lightly. The certification exam includes eight (8) sections with written and/or hands-on lab components. In other words, it’s not just theory—you’re being evaluated on practical understanding as well.
AOLP’s goal is to help each participant succeed, but the expectation is that candidates prepare seriously and show up ready to perform like experienced pros.
